The Rodney Dangerfields of College Football..
Written by ekg on January 9, 2009 – 7:05 pm -I am so tired of the disrespect, the questions, and the doubt. You know what…Why did the Gators deserve to play the BCS Championship game? Besides having one of the toughest schedules in college football this year, they won their division(SEC) and in order to win their division, which year after year is one of the toughest divisions in college football, they had to beat the number one team. Did you hear that, they won their division AND beat the number one team in the country.
When the Florida Gators went into that game there wasn’t a single opposition to Alabama being number one. The weight of that game, with it being the SEC Championship ensured that the winner would move onto the BCS Championship game. Had Alabama won would USC or Texas being whining about how they should be in there?
Texas? Who lost an embarrassing game to Texas Tech, sorry, you didn’t win your division by beating the number one team in the country.
USC? Oops.. You didn’t win your division by beating the number one team in the country.
Utah State, the only 13-0 team? You deserve mad respect for your accomplishment, but not a title game. Your season consisted of playing the equivalent of JV football teams. I’m not saying you or the teams you played weren’t any good, but they weren’t up to varsity level.
The Gators went up against the highest scoring team in college history who was lead by the number one quarterback in the country, Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. This team all throughout the year has been an unstoppable force in college football.
Florida didn’t deserve to be in the game. Are you kidding? They absolutely deserved to be there. How do I know this… Because they won!
If your complaint is that your team could have beaten Oklahoma, then your complaint is that Oklahoma didn’t deserve to be there not with Florida for being there. If your complaint is that you would have beaten Florida? Well two powerhouses in college have thought the same thing, Ohio State 2 years ago and Oklahoma last night..Both were wrong. Both were embarrassed by the much smaller and much younger UF team.
Consider this, UF’s defense doesn’t have a single senior on it. Do you understand what that means? These guys have only been playing on the team and with each other for 1-3 yrs, most of them 1-2 years and they went up against the number one team in the country and beat them. 32 days later they went up against the highest scoring team in history and held them to 14 points, stopped 2 consecutive drives on the goal line-forcing an interception the 2nd time and then slowing down the fast striking no-huddle offense that no other team has been able to control. This young defense held the Heisman trophy winner to 14 points!
As if that wasn’t enough for some much due respect, this isn’t the 1st time the Gators have done this. In 2006 they went up against another Heisman winning quarterback leading a powerhouse of a team. I’ve never heard as many jokes before a game in my life and the embarrassment Ohio suffered in that loss was fitting for all the smack they had talked leading up to that game.
Speaking of which, Hey, Dominique Franks.. If Tim Tebow would only be a 4th ranked QB in the BIg 12… Then what does that make Sam Bradford? Unranked? Hell, what does that make you?
Texas, Utah and USC fans are screaming that Florida didn’t deserve to be in the game in the 1st place, don’t deserve the National Title and they aren’t really a serious football team anyway. Tell me this people, how many Heisman’s do they have to be nominated for or win, how many number one teams do they have to beat, how many Heisman trophy winners do they have to subdue, how many of the fastest and highest scoring offenses do they have to hold to 14 points and how many do they have to beat to get any respect? Just give me a number…1,3,5? For every bar that has been set, the Gators have broken it. How many more do you want to give them before you’ll give them any respect?
There are sore losers and sore winners the day after every football game. But to sit there and say that the Gators didn’t deserve to be there and don’t deserve the title is being the lowest form of sore loser. If your team could have done better? Well they should have and maybe they could the ones wearing the orange and blue tread mark across their back.
