The independent bar-formally known as Barbarella-is my favorite place in downtown Orlando. Saturday nights have the best music in town. Friday is indy(ie) (seriously, people fight over the spelling of the shortening of the word Independant. Crazy!) night which is ok but I like to dance and dancing happens when Saturday night comes around. Saturday night is Old Wave night. Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy, Echo and the Bunnymen etc etc. It’s hard to find time to rehydrate as another great song is played when one finishes. Sunday night is a little of the same with Sunday Night Vinyl (SNV), but I can’t get out there much-work at 7 am means Sunday is home day. I’ve been to this bar countless times and it is consistently a good time. The atmosphere is dark and cool. And I mean temperature cool. The air is flowing and while you might sweat from dancing you aren’t getting heat stroke. The drinks are strong and very well priced. The bouncers come around and clean up after you if you are lucky enough to get a table…I guess bouncers aren’t needed often to bounce old wave folks…(that’s old-wave folks, not old folks. 30 is still young!) The bathrooms are decent and never a huge line for them. I guess people absorb whatever liquids they can throw down their throats. The crowd is congenial-a bunch of people who want to dance to great music and not necessarily find someone to sleep with. I have to say that at first I wanted the old Barbarella back with the outside live band area but I quickly realized that a) the inside bathrooms are so much cleaner and nicer! and b) I was pretty much inside all the time listening to the great music so who the hell cares! Check them out!
