I'm off to the walk-in clinic since nobody at the ER nor my doctor will answer a simple question for me.

Yesterday afternoon, I dislodged my big toenail. There was so little pain involved I wasn't even aware I had done it until last night when I noticed I could lift my big toenail up.

Now normally, I would just give it time and let the thing fall off on it's own or yank the thing out (which would only hurt for about half a minute). But, being diabetic, I have to be concerned whether this would be the right course of action or not.

So I called Palm Bay Community Hospital and the person who answered the phone transferred me to a nurse at the ER. I explain the situation to the nurse and ask if I should wait until monday when I can visit my doctor or get any urgent care. She tells me she can't give any advice over the phone and to call my primary doctor's office and there will be an on-call attendant. I call my primary and the on-call answers and after explaining the same exact thing to him, he says he'll have my doctor call me. So my doctor calls me back, he sounds groggy so he was either drinking or sleeping (sounded more sleepy than drunk though), and I explain it to him what the problem was and he tells me to go to the MIMA walk-in clinic Saturday morning and have them look at it.

I'm aware that with today's sue happy society that healthcare is weary about giving any medical advice over the phone so they just don't, but it seems that there should be some simple things that should'nt require an office visit to answer. I'm not concerend about the cost of the visit because I've already met my deductables for the year and am 100% covered now. I just hate the thought of taking a physicians time when somebody with a serious problem may be needing help.

Fishing line + lamp post + car + snickers bar = problem solved.

LOL Smiley

I walked into the doctors office and the nurse asks "How are you today?"
I said, "doing fine."
She says, "Now if you were fine, you wouldn't be here."
I said, "Well, I'm not in any pain and I don't feel ill, so as far as I'm concerned, I'm doing fine."

Doctor comes in, looks at my big toe and the toenail and says, "the nail will eventually fall off and a new one will grow." DUH!

He said just watch for any infection and if there are any signs of infection, get it checked immediately." DUH!

Now here's the kicker, "I want you to go to your Podiatrist on Monday and have x-rays done for any fractures." WTF! I've had fractured bones before and everytime I've fractured a bone there has been swelling and pain, neither of which I have.

Next time I'll just go to whoneedsanmd.com...

Obviously not enough attention was given as a child.  And, thank you for telling us about your nasty toenail.  Fucking barf.

Oh, come on Cone... it's not that big of a deal.  From what i gather, the medical "advice" he got from the attending could have been given over the phone with brief Q and A session.  I get what he's saying.

When I was in the military, I was on mess duty for two weeks prior to my schooling start time.  Wearing combat boots every day in a wet environment for 12 hrs a day, let to one of my toe nails saying "buh bye".  No pain, it just came right off, and eventually, another thing resembling a toe nail grew back in its place.  No need to swamp the medical clinics for things like this, when an "on call" doctor could have taken care of his worries over the phone.

... again, I blame the ambulance chasing attorneys for this.  Doctors afraid to "make a call" on something, for fear of being sued, so off to a clinic they send him.

why didnt you just goto the new Grand Health department in Viera.

say you name was Juan Pablo and you have no insurance... you'd probably have gotten in much quicker and been given the care you needed without the hoops.

Dude, I had that happen about a year and a half ago. I ran a dolly with an AC condenser partially up on my big toe on my right foot. Hurt like a bitch!

When I took my shoe off that evening I saw blood at the toe of my sock, and yeah, the nail was loose. I ended up knocking it off a couple days later camping.

It grew back, but it took a few months to grow back out fully.

Fuckin toe without a nail is creepy looking.

Since we're telling toe tales....years ago I went to put on a pair of sandals and hit my left little toe with the side of my palm - not hard, just a tap - and the nail popped loose, top down. It was still attached at the cuticle end but a little cautious probing had it painlessly off with a new nail underneath.
I don't know what I had managed to do to make that nail fall off but I am just glad there was a new nail underneath. Bare nailbeds HURT.

I did that several times as a little girl, to both little toes, and now I have a split toenail on each! Literally, two separate toenails grow next to each other. I am sure one is the cuticle but it looks like two  Cheesy

Changing the subject, how high of a fever is necessary to make a trip to the ER on a weekend night? I'm not talking children, I'm talking grownup Puffys.
