Bandwidth being used (not just by you) controls the speed of your downloads as well as your internet connection.

As far as I know (which is nothing) ... there is no such accelerator that actually works.

When I added a 512 stick to my computer's stock 128 stick (giving me 640 ram), everything seemed to speed up a lot.

Can you increase your ram?

Do you 'puter people know if increasing your ram will actually increase d/l speed?  Or do you just have to get a faster internet connection?

your ram should be up to at last 2 or 3 GB unless you are using an antique.

In that case... yes. It would slow your dls. But "acceleration software" isn't going to do shit.

Ram is random acess memory. It goes there first (dumped) like garbage to be processed. The more ram you have (in conjunction with proccessing speed) the faster everything happens.

More RAM does not always equal faster if it can't unload as fast as you are filling it.

Your overall system sped up because Windows wasn't cacheing as much information with the hard drive, so in turn when you freed the processor of that additional task it gave it more cpu time to handle downloads at more normal speeds.  Shy of that, no, there isn't anything that'll make the internet faster.  Any provider that gives you a piece of software that says will give you increased speeds is full of it.  While you're reading what's in front of you, the software is downloading all the related pages to all the links on the website you're on making it seem your internet is running quicker.

As far as the original question is concerned, the only thing that will truly make the internet overall faster for you is to buy a router with a real firewall built in.  Then what you do is run a program called spybot, it'll show you tracking cookies from about 10 to 12 different advertising servers.  Once you've logged into your new router, plugged in the accursed advertising servers addresses, and from then on instead of advertising you'll see "website blocked by <insert router manufacturer>.  Websites load up beaucoup quick since it no longer had to wait for what's typically the first thing to load, the advertising.

I miss my old router T_T

Do you or anybody have a list of those?  It would save me the trouble of getting spybot and running it to find out... Smiley

Thanks!

When I get home, I'll post a list of them up and how I have them defined in my router.  Not that it's making a great deal of difference Sad

The router I used to have was a Netgear ProSafe variety w/ VPN Firewall and I see now that they've made one similar w/ wireless built-in, model FWG-114P.  Here's to halfway hoping my current one blows up to give me an excuse to buy this other one Smiley
