This weekend I walked by this box and thought of this shot. It is pretty much the same concept as the shot from Friday, but this shot was a little more “complex”. The other shot was just one flash with a remote trigger inside the box and window light for the “main” light. The outside of this box is a lot more interesting than a cardboard box, so I wanted the lighting to compliment that. That meant I needed two “lights”, a main and a fill. I used my good flash for the main and the window light for fill. That gives us the dimension, but I still needed “sun”.
I have a cheap…like super cheap little flash that will fire off when it detects a dramatic change in the lighting…in other words when it sees another flash go off. This type of flash is called a slave. So stuck the slave in the box with an orange gel thing to make it more sunny. The problem I ran into is that I wasn’t getting enough light into the box to trigger the slave. So I lined the inside of the box with aluminum foil thinking that it would reflect the light from the main flash down to the sensor. It worked perfect and there was a bonus. Having the foil inside the box also reflected the “sun light” around giving us a cool glow.
Tonight I was offering a friend some advice for taking pictures of her puppies and I figured that I better see if I could practice what I was preaching.
I was driving around looking for something to take pictures of and noticed the sky.
Pretty intense…
I got this package in the mail today…I wonder if they insured it.
So…someone says to you, they say “take this here and make interesting pictures”, and they hand you a box. So you are thinking…hmm what is in the box…it sure doesn’t weigh very much. In fact it feels like it could even be empty.
You take the box back to your studio…dare you peak inside before you get there.
No you really should wait.
You carefully place the box on the bench and start to open it slowly…

After I took the pic from last night, I started taking pics of the big pile of blocks. I just couldn’t make it work the way I wanted though. Then when I started putting things away I was inspired…
I am still playing around with minimalism…
Minimalism…it is describe as stripping down something to its most fundamental features. OK…so what the fuck does that mean. I mean…I think I understand the concept…maybe, but then I read the definition and then I wonder if I really understand it. Is there more too it? Is there some deeper thing that I am supposed to get to? Well…I decided to just go ahead with my simplistic interpretation.
So is that minimalist…or just simpleton?
So I started this pic the other day, August 8, 2008…it has taken me three days to make it work. Lighting glass objects in an interesting way is a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Pork chops and mac-n-cheese, that is a classic meal right? So how about a little retro treatment…
