Today I was near downtown so I stopped by this place downtown called the City Arts Factory. There is a gallery there where they make hand blown glass stuff. It is called Keila Glassworks. The cool part…they have a studio right there, and if you catch them when they are blowing glass you can hang out and watch. I was in there a few months ago, but they had already finished blowing for the day. So today I lucked out and caught them just as they were starting a new piece.
I got quite a few pictures but this one was the coolest one.
I don’t really feel like writing anything…I hope you don’t mind.
I have tried doing a shot like this in the past and could never get it to work. Tonight I got it to work.
I went out late to get something to eat tonight. Once I got my burger I drove around the shopping center a bit. In the back of my mind I was thinking maybe I could find something interesting to take a picture of. I came across a fountain with blue lights. It really looked neat so I figured I would try to see what I could do with it. I didn’t have real high hopes because I didn’t have my tripod and there wasn’t much light to work with. As I figured capturing the fountain wasn’t working so I tried something a bit different…
OK, technically the light used for this pic is actually hard, but the subject very “soft”.
Speaking of the subject…I cut this from the gardenia plant in front of my house.
Hard light is something that most of the time we are trying to avoid when we take pictures. Hard light tends to be harsh and can ruin good pictures, but sometimes hard light works. One situation where hard light works well is with geometric shapes. The harsh light brings out the shapes, and in this case I like how the light makes it way through the cracks…
I tried taking a picture of one of these bottles once before but I couldn’t make it work. The setup I used to shoot the beer glass worked so well I figured I would try it with this bottle. I think it worked pretty well for this one too. I did actually have to move the lights around a bit because I was getting a bad reflection off the front of the bottle…
