it’s something…

Tonight I have another one of those shots that I took not know if it was going to work or not. I think there is something about rusty metal that intrigues me…not sure why.

Oh yeah the other interesting tidbit about this pic…I bet it is something that very few people who go to Islands of Adventure ever see. You have to walk off the beaten path and down a set of steps then walk a hundred feet or so to a dead end.

Tonight I fired up the Big Green Egg to cook a couple burgers. When the burgers came off the fire, the grate was kind of funky, so I opened things up a bit to burn off the gunk. A few minutes later I went back out to check on it, I found flames shooting out the top of the grill. Naturally I ran back in the house to get the camera.

I couldn’t figure how to shoot the flames coming out of the top, so I experimented with the burning coals. I think this could be better, but it is still pretty neat.

fire!

Oh yeah the thermometer on the grill was reading 800+ degrees…

Sometimes I feel a little bit like a slacker taking so many sunset pics, cause it is pretty much point the camera west and mash on the shutter button. I guess there is a bit more to it. You do have to keep the horizon level and stuff. Also getting the right exposure is kind of important. You have to balance getting enough light to see the detail you want, but not so much that the shot is completely blown out.

Meh…still feels kind of like the lazy way out sometimes…

concentric

Filed under: junk — mlg @ 7:56 pm

This week the assignment is concentric. The first thing I thought of for this subject was wood. I figured I could go to the store and find an interesting piece of oak or something, but yesterday I was in my garage and noticed this piece that used to be the top of a table I built. It is loaded with concentric patterns, I just had to work out how to shoot it. I think I did OK.

simple

Filed under: junk — mlg @ 7:35 pm

Tonight I figured I would post this nice simple flower, but while I was processing the picture I realized something…sometimes I don’t always do a good job looking at the full frame. What happens is I get a bit too caught up in the subject and fail to notice something in the shot that takes away from the overall pic. Like this shot tonight, I ended up cropping off the whole bottom half of the picture because there was an ugly brown leaf in part of the frame. Not just in the frame…it was in the frame and in focus. I was so busy making sure I was getting the flower just the way I wanted it, that I didn’t bother paying attention to the bottom part of the shot (I was shooting portrait (long ways) to get more of the stem). So this is something that I am going to have to work on.

extreme

The assignment for today is an extreme crop. In other words take a picture, then “crop” the picture to bring out a particular detail. I put “crop” in quotes because the assignment allowed for an in camera crop. In other words taking two pics. The idea is to teach you to look deeper at the subject.

I am not sure I am all that excited about either of these shots, but I think it completes the assignment.

juxtaposed

Filed under: junk — mlg @ 9:11 pm

Once again tonight is a bit of a recycled subject. I was trying to use this typewriter in another shot that wasn’t coming together right. For that shot I had the typewriter sitting on the desk and while I was trying to put that shot together I noticed the contrast of old and new and thought it might be interesting to do a little bit of a play on that.

juxtaposed

And yeah I guess for a true juxtaposition the monitor should be in focus, but I really just wanted the computer to be the background.
