I was having a hard time coming up with something to shoot tonight. I did some stuff and wasn’t really feeling it. Tried some other stuff and it was meh. Then I drank some beer and did something else…not good. Drank some more beer and noticed the mannequin. So I figured I could work on some lighting stuff using my new model.
Tonight we have another assignment. This one is one of the older assignments, but they actually encourage people to go back and complete the older assignments, so I figured I would give it a try.
The idea is someone standing on a stage looking out into the crowd.
It was a little cold to be outside taking pics tonight, but I think this is a pretty good picture of my guard dog.
You know those things that you pick up on the beach and you have no idea what they are. I mean you know they came out of the ocean and stuff, but you don’t really really know what it is. Is it coral…sure let’s call it coral. If it isn’t a shell it must be coral right?
So here is some “coral” that my kid and I found on a beach somewhere. Here is a neat tidbit about this picture…it is bigger than the “coral”. Seriously the actual piece is about 1″ square.
So I got a new lens for my camera today. It is the same kind of lens I was talking about the other day, the one that I was bidding for on eBay. The one on eBay went to over $70, so $80 with shipping. For me it wasn’t worth spending that much on a used lens, so I asked the boss and she told me to go ahead and get a new one…so I did. It is an AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. They call it a fast lens, because it works really well in low light. Anyway, I snapped off some quick test shots using the first subject I saw…my wife’s hydroponic lettuce.
I finally asked my wife if she knew where the chess set was hiding. She said “I don’t know…it is over there under that box.” She didn’t know where it was, but told me exactly where to find it…go figure. All the pieces are glass, so I needed to figure an interesting way to shoot it. I used some of the tips that I read for shooting bottles and it was working, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. It needed something. I tried changing the color of the light, but it was a little too much.
Then I tried something…something a little more subtle, and it fucking worked great. At least I think it worked. What do you think?
I didn’t get to shoot today…well I did take a few pics, but I am pretty sure they are not very interesting. I was reading online about a lens that is supposed to be really great and it only costs about $120. Since that is a really good price for a great lens I figured I needed to investigate it some more. So I went over to the camera store and they let me take a few test shots. I was pretty impressed. So impressed that I did something I very rarely do…I found the lens used on eBay and bid on it. The shipping is $10 and I bid $35, so if I can get a really great lens for $45 I will be pretty happy. I might even go up to $55, and the neatest part about it is that I will be paying for it with money I made selling some of my pictures.
Anyway I dug through my pics from last weekend and found this one that is pretty nice…
Question: What is something I am not?
Tonight I had another weekly assignment to complete. This weeks assignment is “falling”. The idea is to capture something during a free fall. The first thing I thought of was falling leaves, but I haven’t quite figured out how to pull off this shot yet. So I thought maybe feathers, but I don’t have any feathers handy. What do I have handy?
Packing peanuts! Those are handy and should fall slow enough to photography. Unfortunately they fall a bit faster than I expected, but I still managed to get a shot that is pretty close to what I had in my head.
So there was a lunar eclipse tonight. I was all ready to take some really cool pics of it. Well I got a couple cool pics of the moon, but the pic of the full eclipse is pretty crappy.
Something that I didn’t know…the moon actually moves across the sky pretty quickly. So when you slow the camera down enough to capture what light there is from an eclipsed moon, the moon is moving fast enough to blur the picture.
Anyway here are the shots…

*edit… Here is how I wanted the eclipse pic to come out. clicky
