I moved to Orlando in 1994, before that I had been living in the DC area. I had been delivery pizza for a few years and when you spend that much time in your car listening to the radio and tapes (yeah in the early 90’s I didn’t have a cd player in my car and yeah I used to spill coke on the tapes and fuck them all up…)

Shit…where was I…oh yeah tapes, anyway so it is easy to get bored with the same music over and over and over and over, well you get my point. So I started listening to talk radio…no not that kind of talk radio…that shit will put you to sleep and that is not a good idea when you are trying weave through rush hour traffic. At first it was Don and Mike. Every show was something different and it was funny. It would suck if they were in the middle of a bit and you had to run the pie to the door cause you can see the people peeking out from behind the shade on the front door and you know they are in there saying “what the hell is he doing”…”I don’t know honey, maybe he is scared…is he laughing? Do you think he is laughing at us?”. So I would run to the door and just hope that it wasn’t some old lady who wanted to pay with coins…it is not that her paying with coins was that big a deal to me, the problem is that they tend to want to count it out for you….”25, 50, 75, one dollar”…but I think I am digressing again.

Eventually I moved into a job with more regular hours working in a small retail store. Since the store was small there was a lot of downtime, downtime that was not unlike being alone in your car weaving through traffic. So I started tuning in the talk station where D&M did drive time a little earlier.

Middays at that time was G. Gordon Liddy…this was a totally different take on talk radio then I had been used to listening to, and I tended to disagree with everything Liddy said, but hey it was better then whatever shitty song the pop station was playing 5 times an hour.

Wow where the hell is this going…oh yeah Stern…

Howard Stern was on the same station and eventually I started listening to him as well. I had heard of Stern and heard parts of the show here and there but never really got it. Anyway I eventually started listening to him in the car on the way to work and started “getting it”. So when I moved to Orlando I looked for D&M on local radio and couldn’t find them, but I did find Stern on WTKS.

Much in the same way that I started listening to Stern, I got hooked into Jim Philips and Ed Tyll (who I hear is doing stand up in NYC now). At some point they put the Russ & Bo Show on after Philips. I don’t remember the exact timing on stuff, because I didn’t listen to night time radio all that often, but at some point the Russ & Bo Show introduced the listeners to The Sexy Savannah. When she first stormed onto the radio back then she was often drunk and was almost always loud…at least when I was able to listen.

Somewhere along the way Ed Tyll heard greener grass calling in LA or somewhere and jumped ship. I think it started as a joke, but the Russ & Bo show jumped to mid-days, and eventually was renamed “Monsters of the Midday”. I think it was after the move to mid-days when Savannah began to really take off. She found a creative stride so to speak, and started doing a daily bit called Inside Savannah’s Mind.

Inside Savannah’s Mind was just that…whatever was going on in her head at the time dumped out on paper then read on the air. Sometimes it was a complete bomb other times it killed, either way I would usually laugh. The thing is even when she would “bomb” it was usually because the joke was over the head of everyone in the studio (except Jeff Howell). I think that made it even funnier…

A couple of years ago there was some cluster fuck with Stern and the Monsters became the Monsters in or of the Mornings. This move has resulted in many changes in the show and one of those changes was the loss of Savannah. In my opinion this was a big blow to the show, some people think it was better.

In the long run it looks like it might have worked out well for her because she has moved onto bigger and better things with a big move to New York and rumours of a job at Sirius Satellite radio. Oh yeah and a new website http://friendsofsavannah.com. So hopefully we will all get to see what is going on “Inside Savannah’s Mind” again very soon.

I am sure some people will say “what the fuck?” and the rest of us will laugh.
